Data & Validation

The discussion at the first COSMOS Workshop  underlined the strong need for data for all components of the Earth system. A common (meta) data base would be extremely helpful for a large number of applications. Model data have to be evaluated by diagnostic tools, e.g. for budgeting of chemical compounds, and many of those are still to be developed. Furthermore, there is a high demand for assimilation capability for all component models. Finally, the differentiability of codes would allow the construction of adjoint models and is therefore a highly desirable feature. All these issues will have to be addressed in a future workshop.

"Strategy on model validation - data, diagnostics, assimilation"

E. Schaller (U. Cottbus) and U. Ulbrich (U. Koeln) have agreed to define more precisely the format of such a workshop. They will be in contact with R. Klein (as a WLA representative) with respect to WLA plans regarding a data workshop.
